Amid fanfare, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, October 20, 2025, commissioned the Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu Research Centre (KAARC) at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL).
The commissioning of the research centre was part of activities leading to the 90th Birthday celebration of the donor, Sir (Dr.) Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu, Odole-Oodua of the Source.


According to the Provost, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, the facility would serve as a “hub for cutting-edge research in tropical diseases, public health, genomics and biomedical innovation. It will foster interdisciplinary collaboration, attract global partnerships and elevate the College of Medicine to new heights of academic excellence”.
Expressing the gratitude of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. ‘Muyiwa Falaiye described Sir Kesington as “our benefactor, our father, whom we do not have to run before he comes to meet us.” He urged researchers and students to honour the legacy by maximizing the centre’s potential for the good of mankind.

The Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, hailed the Research Centre as “a living monument to vision, philanthropy, and faith in the power of education and research to transform lives.” He noted that KAARC was not just a building, but a gateway to the future, “a future in which Nigerian medical research will not only serve national needs, but also contribute to the global body of scientific knowledge.”




Echoing these sentiments, Governor Sanwo-Olu applauded Sir Kesington for choosing a path of greatness for himself, that will ensure that his name would remain in existence far beyond his years on earth. He prayed that the donor would live to 100 and above, so he might envision yet another transformative project in the next decade. The Governor also called on the Adebutu family to emulate their patriarch’s commitment to societal progress.

In a brief keynote address at the event, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CMUL and Director of the Centre for Clinical Trials, Research, and Implementation Science (CCTRIS), Prof. Bosede Afolabi, explored the evolving landscape of biomedical research. Speaking on “The Future of Research & its Potential Impact on Society”, she highlighted the integration of Artificial Intelligence into research initiatives and urged stakeholders to embrace high-quality, AI-enhanced research practices. She concluded that the future of healthcare depends on innovation, collaboration, and sustained investment.

In his remarks, the donor, Sir (Dr.) Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu recalled the KAARC journey which started in January 2019. He expressed delight over the completion of the centre, a signature project for him, despite all odds.
His words: “It stands as a signature project – an expression of profound gratitude to God Almighty for His immeasurable grace, mercy and blessings throughout the nine decades of my journey on this earth”.
He noted that the centre was not just a physical structure but a realisation of a long-held vision, a deep commitment to improving healthcare and advancing research in Nigeria. According to him, investing in the frontiers of medical research is one of the most meaningful ways to uplift lives and secure a healthier, brighter future for generations to come.
The event had eminent dignitaries in attendance such as: the Obanikoro of Lagos and his white cap chiefs; Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos, Chief Abiola Dosumu, and President Worldwide of UNILAG Alumni Association, Engr. Ife Oyedele. It also featured goodwill messages from Dr. Abiola Olorode on behalf of the Adebutu Family; and Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, who was ably represented by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo.



About Sir. Dr. Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu, OON, CON, CFR
Born on October 24, 1935, Sir. Dr. Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu, OON, CON, CFR, started his career at Cables and Wires Limited (later called NITEL) and the Claffin Chemicals Limited, where he rose to Regional Sales Manager for Lagos and the then Mid-Western State.
With several honours under his belt, including three Honorary Doctorate Degrees (Honoris Causa), Sir. (Dr.) Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu, OON, CON, CFR, is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
The renowned businessman and philanthropist has undertaken a lot of philanthropic work in Nigeria. and has built a lasting legacy for himself and his family.
