UNILAG Dental Sciences Faculty Marks World Oral Health Day with Free Services for Staff, Students

The Faculty of Dental Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, commemorated World Oral Health Day with a series of impactful activities aimed at promoting oral hygiene and preventive care.

Held at the UNILAG Medical Centre, the outreach, themed Happy Mouth is Happy Life featured oral health talks, free dental screening, scaling and polishing, tooth extractions, and fillings. Participants including staff, students, and other members of the University community received high-quality professional dental care such as prescriptions and treatments using modern equipment.

Speaking at the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences, Professor Olalekan Gbotolorun, described the initiative as a unique opportunity to provide essential clinical support while raising awareness about the importance of oral health. He added that the exercise underscores the Faculty’s commitment to promoting a healthier society through impactful interventions.

According to him, “healthy teeth and a healthy mouth contribute significantly to overall well-being.”

Also speaking, Professor Oyinkansola Sofola of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, UNILAG, emphasized that oral care is vital at every stage of life, from infancy to old age. She noted that the initiative was designed to celebrate the global health day and bridge the gap in access to dental care.

She observed that many people often neglect dental health due to lack of awareness, fear of procedures such as extractions, and the perceived high cost of treatment. According to her, this outreach was deliberately made free to encourage wider participation and promote preventive care.

Prof. Sofola further highlighted the strong connection between oral health and overall body health, warning that untreated oral bacteria can pose serious risks if not properly managed. She stressed that regular dental check-ups can help prevent infections and other health complications.

“The mouth and the body are inextricably connected; therefore, oral health must be taken seriously,” she said, urging individuals to prioritize proper oral hygiene for a healthier life.

During a practical demonstration session, Dr Elijah Mercy, a Resident Doctor in Community Dentistry at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), educated participants on proper brushing techniques. She noted that improper brushing habits have led to widespread dental issues and advised that individuals should brush at least twice daily, once in the morning and before bedtime.

She also recommended the use of fluoride-based toothpaste, describing the mouth as “a mirror of overall health,” and emphasised that maintaining good oral hygiene is fundamental to general well-being.

Dignitaries present at the event included Dr. Mgbamere Juliet, Dr. Falokun Bridget, Professor Umeizudike Ifeoma, Dr. Saliu Zainab, Dr. Ifediggbo Ogochukwu, and Dr Kyari Fatimah. Also in attendance were the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Johnson Agunsoye, Director of Staff Training and Development Unit, Mrs Aderonke Asiwaju, alongside other distinguished members of the University community.

The 2026 Faculty of Dental Sciences Outreach reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing health awareness and providing accessible healthcare services within and beyond its campus.
