The Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos (UNILAG), commenced a two-day retreat for its academic and non-teaching staff on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to accessible, high-quality education.
Held at the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre (AMDRC), the retreat convened staff and key stakeholders to strengthen systems, refine processes, and enhance service delivery.

Themed: DLI of the Future: Optimizing Strategic Frameworks for Innovative Excellence, the programme focused on positioning DLI, UNILAG as a leader in Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
Setting the Agenda
The Opening Session set the tone for the Strategic Staff Retreat, with the University team led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, in attendance.
In her welcome address, the Director of DLI, UNILAG, Professor Risikat Dauda described the retreat as a deliberate platform for addressing critical issues. She stressed that DLI’s relevance in the ODL space requires continuous innovation and collective responsibility.

Professor Dauda called for stronger integration of blended learning models, learner-centred approaches, and responsive support systems to meet evolving learner needs.
Addressing participants, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, urged members of staff to rise above mediocrity, noting that the strength of any institution lies in the quality, mindset, and commitment of its people.

She challenged the notion of any distinction between DLI certificates and those from conventional programmes, stressing that with aligned standards in teaching and processes, there should be no difference in quality or value. This philosophy, she explained, underpins her insistence that all graduates receive certificates of equal standing.
Beyond speeches, the opening session also featured the introduction of newly recruited staff, further strengthening the Institute’s human capital.

Key Presentations
Day One of the Strategic Staff Retreat featured presentations from seasoned resource persons on various topics revolving around the theme:

- AI and Ethics in ODL: Professor Olusola Oyebola of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Physical and Earth Sciences, UNILAG spoke on “Exploring the Ethical Challenges and Implications of Artificial Intelligence Integration in ODL.” His session sparked conversations on the use of synchronous and asynchronous digital tools and the ethical considerations that must guide their adoption.

- Learner Support: Mrs. Aderonke Asiwaju, Director of the Staff Training and Development Unit, spoke on “Understanding and Responding to Changing Student Needs and Experiences: The Role of Learner Support.” She noted that many DLI students are working professionals balancing multiple responsibilities, and urged staff to adopt a more empathetic, flexible, and learner-focused approach.

- Examination Management: Professor Mathew O. Ilorin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), closed the first day with “Management of Examination Administration in the ODL Ecosystem.” He underscored the importance of efficiency, coordination, and integrity across every stage of the examination process, from planning to feedback.
