Bridging Continents, Building Solutions: UNILAG, Birmingham Students Advance Global Sustainability Agenda

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham, Singapore Campus have presented innovative, sustainability-driven solutions aimed at future-proofing businesses and communities, at a Virtual Mobility Exchange Programme Dissemination Meeting held on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The dissemination meeting, funded by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), marked a major milestone in the ongoing project titled Virtual Mobility Exchange Programme for Undergraduate Students on Reimagining Integrated Environmental Sustainability to Future-Proof Businesses and Communities . The initiative strongly aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action.

Co-hosted by Dr. Temitope Sogbanmu of UNILAG and Dr. Nana Bonsu of Birmingham Business School, the virtual event brought together students, faculty members, and invited guests across multiple time zones: 08:00 GMT (9:00 a.m. UK and Nigeria; 4:00 p.m. Singapore), underscoring the truly global and inclusive character of the initiative.

Cross-Border Collaboration in Action

The session commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Soladoye Iwajomo of the Department of Zoology, University of Lagos, who also moderated the event. This was followed by an opening address from Jasmine Ashhurst, Senior Programme Officer, International Mobility Team at the ACU, who commended the strong collaborative partnership driving this impactful project.

Participants were then taken through a comprehensive overview of the project’s activities and milestones by the Principal Investigators, Dr. Temitope Sogbanmu and Dr. Nana Bonsu. They highlighted months of virtual engagement, cross-cultural collaboration, and interdisciplinary research exchanges, demonstrating the power of digital innovation in advancing inclusive and equitable education and fostering global partnerships.

Students in the Spotlight

The intellectual high point of the meeting featured presentations by five student groups, each allotted eight minutes to share their findings and sustainability proposals.

The presentations reflected deep engagement with pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges facing contemporary businesses and communities, offering practical and context-sensitive solutions rooted in innovation, policy awareness, responsible consumption and production, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth.

From sustainable business models to community-based environmental resilience strategies, the students demonstrated not only academic excellence but also a growing consciousness of their roles as responsible global citizens committed to advancing sustainability.

Dialogue, Reflection and Future Action

A robust question-and-answer session followed, providing an avenue for faculty facilitators and participants to interrogate ideas, offer constructive feedback, and deepen discussions around implementation pathways and scalability.

In a reflective segment, students shared personal experiences from the exchange programme, highlighting key takeaways and outlining action plans inspired by the collaboration. Many described the initiative as transformative, broadening their perspectives on sustainability, intercultural communication, and innovative problem-solving in a globally interconnected world.

A Note of Gratitude

The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Nana Bonsu and a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Temitope Sogbanmu, who expressed appreciation to the students, facilitators, and the ACU for supporting a programme that bridges continents while nurturing the next generation of sustainability-focused leaders.

She also made special mention of the supportive leadership of the Director of the Research Management Office, Prof. Solomon Okunuga; Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Prof. Ganiyu Oyetibo; and the Head, Department of Zoology, Prof. Kehinde Kemabonta – all of whom she said lent their weight to the successful hosting of the programme.

The dissemination meeting not only celebrated the achievements of the participating students but also reinforced the strategic importance of virtual mobility in expanding access to global learning opportunities.

As universities continue to reimagine international collaboration in an increasingly digital world, initiatives such as this ACU-funded exchange demonstrate that geography need not limit intellectual partnership; and that the future of sustainability will be shaped by young minds working collaboratively across borders to build a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable world.
