As technological advancement continues to reshape societies and redefine how people learn, communicate, and work, the need to embrace diversity, innovation, and international cooperation took centre stage at the 2026 French Day “FRANCOFEST 3.0” organized by the French Unit of the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The event, which was held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Faculty of Arts Lecture Theatre, had the theme: “A World to Come: Diversity, Innovation and Cooperation.”
Delivering the welcome address, the Coordinator of Cercle Français, Dr. Olusola Oguntola, observed that the world is evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven largely by technological advancement and increasing cultural diversity.
According to her, while technology continues to transform learning, communication, and work, the future will be shaped not by isolated individuals or nations, but by people who embrace collaboration, appreciate differences, and adapt to change.
She stressed that the future is created through deliberate choices, collective action, and a shared commitment to humanity. He urged participants to build a society where diversity is celebrated, innovation is encouraged, and cooperation serves as a guiding principle.
Dr. Oguntola further challenged participants to view the study of the French language beyond linguistic proficiency, describing it as a gateway to intercultural understanding, global citizenship, and international opportunities. She noted that learning French offers the chance to discover new cultures, build meaningful cross-border relationships, and cultivate mutual respect.
Encouraging participants to become ambassadors of these ideals, he urged them to promote dialogue instead of division, embrace creativity instead of fear, and prioritise collaboration over competition. He added that the French language remains an important bridge connecting people across cultures and opening doors to global engagement.
In his remarks, the Head of the Department of European Languages and Integration Studies, Professor John Faloju, congratulated the French Unit for successfully hosting the event. He described it as a commendable initiative that continues to strengthen the Unit’s relevance and contribution to the Department’s academic and cultural engagements.
The event featured a keynote address by Mr. Kayode Ogundele, an Administrative, Operations and Facilities Management Professional, who examined the role of diversity, innovation, and cooperation in preparing individuals for an increasingly interconnected world.
A panel discussion that highlighted practical insights on career development, multilingualism, and the value of cross-cultural competence in today’s global economy also enriched the programme.
The panelists were:
- Mrs. Lolade Ajakaye, Business Development Executive, Interswitch;
- Miss Faith Afeme, UNILAG Alumna and Creative Thinker;
- Miss Favour Fasina, Multilingual Educator, Brand and Marketing Strategist; and
- Miss Afuye Ifeoluwa, UNILAG Alumnus and Key Account Manager, Jumia Nigeria.
FRANCOFEST 3.0 also featured the presentation of commemorative plaques in recognition of individuals whose contributions have supported the growth and success of the French Day initiative.
