Bridging Technology and Inclusion: UNILAG Hosts AI and Disability Dialogue

The Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Lab (Nigeria AILab) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the Centre for Disability and Inclusion Africa (CDAI), on Wednesday, March 4, 2025, hosted a Focus Group Discussion on Artificial Intelligence and Disability at the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre, UNILAG.

The event explored how artificial intelligence can be designed to better serve persons with disabilities (PWDs) by embedding accessibility and inclusion into AI systems.

The dialogue brought together AI researchers, web developers, disability advocates, and representatives from various disability clusters. Moderated by Dr. Adekemi Omotubora of the Faculty of Law, UNILAG, participants shared insights on the benefits and challenges of AI in everyday life.

Participants highlighted how digital tools such as Be My Eyes and live transcription services have improved navigation and communication for many persons with disabilities. However, they also pointed to existing limitations, including:

  • the high cost of assistive technologies such as AI-powered wheelchairs, which can cost millions of naira;
  • usability challenges like inaccurate currency identification; and
  • concerns surrounding privacy and data security

While discussing possible solutions, participants proposed innovative technologies including AI-powered smart walking sticks for visually-impaired individuals and sign language translation tools for people who are hearing-impaired. They also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between developers and end users to ensure that AI systems are designed with inclusivity at their core.

The Acting Director of NIT Hub UNILAG, Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, encouraged participants to explore DAWN AI’s AIDA (AI Diagnostic Agent), a platform designed to support learners with neurodevelopmental differences such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and dyslexia.

Other key contributions came from the Director of CDAI, Mr. Yinka Olaito; Programme Lead at CDAI, Busola Oladotun; the Head of the Department of Computer Science, UNILAG, Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo; and the Lead Principal Investigator of Nigeria AILab, Dr. Oladipupo Sennaike.

The discussion underscored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities. At the same time, it highlighted the urgent need for inclusive policies, sustained stakeholder engagement, and stronger partnerships across academia, technology, government, and advocacy groups to ensure that emerging technologies leave no one behind.
