The roar of machines, the gleam of conveyor belts, and the sheer scale of production greeted postgraduate students of Production and Operations Management (BUS 825) from the Department of Business Administration as they stepped into the Dangote Sugar Refinery (DSR) in Apapa, Lagos on July 3, 2026.
This wasn’t just a tour, it was an immersive journey into industrial reality, where the theories of the Layout and Locations Model came alive in steel, steam, and sugar crystals. For the students, every pipeline, pump, and packaging line became a vivid illustration of how strategic facility design and location choices drive efficiency, safety, and scale in one of Africa’s largest food processing plants.
Welcome Address and Safety Briefing
The visit commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Hassan Salisu, General Manager, Human Resources & Administration, who highlighted the company’s extensive transport network, ensuring nationwide and cross‑border product distribution.
A detailed safety briefing followed, led by the Head of Safety. This covered emergency exits, fire safety, PPE rules, and hygiene protocols critical in food processing environments.
Industry Overview
Mrs. Ngozi Ngene, Head of Corporate Affairs, provided an overview of DSR’s vision to become a global leader in integrated sugar production, with goals to produce up to two (2) million tonnes annually from locally grown sugarcane.
She highlighted the key areas of operation including:
- Apapa Operations: Refining imported raw sugar with a capacity of 1.44 million tonnes per annum, powered by a 16MW in‑house plant.
- Numan Operations: Local sugar production in Adamawa State with 50,000 tonnes per annum capacity.
- Subsidiaries: Adamawa, Nasarawa, Taraba, and Ghana operations.
- Products: Vitamin A‑fortified and non‑fortified refined sugar in diverse packaging sizes.
- Backward Integration Program (BIP): Targeting 1.08 million tonnes annually from local sugarcane.
- CSR Initiatives: Education, boreholes, empowerment schemes, sports, and farmer out‑grower programs.
- Sustainability Goals: Alignment with UN SDGs including Climate Action, Responsible Consumption, Decent Work, Clean Water, Quality Education, and Zero Hunger.
Inside the Plant: Layout and Location Insights
Students explored the refinery’s hybrid facility layout, which combines:
- Process Flow Layout: a functional sequence from raw sugar reception through melting, clarification, filtration, decolorization, evaporation, crystallization, centrifugation, drying, fortification, and packaging.
- Product Flow Layout: continuous large‑volume production with sugar moving seamlessly through pipelines, pumps, and conveyors.
Students also learnt that the key factors influencing DSR’s location and layout decisions included proximity to ports, suppliers, markets, infrastructure, and labor pools, while the criteria for effective layout design were ease of supervision, cost minimization, safety, flexibility, and compliance with regulations.
The guided tour reinforced classroom concepts by showing how layout and location models directly impact efficiency, safety, and scalability in industrial operations. Students gained practical insights into:
- The integration of process and product layouts in large‑scale manufacturing.
- The strategic importance of location decision in logistics and supply chain success.
- The role of safety, supervision, and compliance in sustaining operations.
The Dangote Sugar Refinery tour was a transformative learning journey. By observing the plant’s hybrid facility layout and understanding the strategic factors behind its location, students gained a deeper appreciation of how the Layout and Locations Model directly shapes efficiency, safety, and scalability in industrial operations. The experience offered vivid, real-world insights into how thoughtful design and placement decisions drive success in large-scale production environments.
