SUMMARY:UNILAG to Commission GP2–CMUL Molecular Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:The University of Lagos will on Wednesday\, 21 January 2026\, formally commission the GP2–CMUL Molecular Laboratory\, a state-of-the-art research facility at the College of Medicine\, University of Lagos (CMUL). \nThe commissioning ceremony\, which will take place at 12:00 noon at the 1st Floor\, KAARC Building\, CMUL\, will be preceded by a pre-commissioning seminar at 10:00 a.m. at the Old Great Hall\, CMUL\, with guests expected to be seated by 9:45 a.m. \nThe Molecular Laboratory is funded by the University’s global research partners\, Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP)\, an international organisation focused on accelerating research outcomes for Parkinson’s disease\, the world’s second most common neurodegenerative disorder and the fastest-growing in prevalence globally. \nASAP supports the Global Parkinson’s Genetics Program (GP2)\, under which it has\, for over five years\, funded Africa’s largest Parkinson’s disease research cohort\, coordinated from the University of Lagos. To date\, ASAP’s cumulative investment in Parkinson’s disease research at UNILAG has exceeded USD 2.5 million \nIn furtherance of its commitment to strengthening research capacity in under-represented regions\, ASAP has funded the establishment and equipping of the GP2–CMUL Molecular Laboratory\, with equipment and personnel support valued at over ₦250 million. The laboratory is located within the recently commissioned KAARC Building at CMUL. \nThe facility will function as an automated DNA extraction laboratory and biobank\, with plans to expand its genomics capabilities. It will also support internships for undergraduate and postgraduate students\, provide access for other researchers\, and serve as a centre for training in genomics and bioinformatics. \nThe GP2 programme at the College of Medicine\, University of Lagos\, is coordinated by Professor Njideka U. Okubadejo\, who serves as the Principal Investigator.
