UNILAG 12th Annual Health Week: Psychology Expert Canvasses for Effective Communication and Interpersonal Relationship in the Workplace

The Head of Psychological Services at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Dr. Omotayo F. Ajirotutu has canvassed for effective communication and interpersonal relationship in the workplace.

Dr. Ajirotutu made the call on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, while delivering a Public Lecture on Effective Communication and Interpersonal Relationship: Key to a Healthy & Productive Workplace at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG). The lecture formed part of the line-up of activities organized by the UNILAG Medical Centre to mark the 12th Annual Health Week.

The event provided a platform for members of the audience which included staff and students of the university to understand the concept of effective communication such as hearing vs listening and effective listening; steps involved in effective communication; key elements and barriers of communication; benefits of effective communication and strategies of effective communication.

Dr. Ajirotutu’s presentation also highlighted the types and characteristics of good interpersonal relationships; as well as the characteristics and benefits of a healthy and productive workplace.

According to him, “a healthy and productive workplace refers to an environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to perform their best work. This type of workplace promotes physical, emotional, and mental well-being, leading to increased job satisfaction, productivity, and overall success.”

While pointing out the similarities and differences between effective communication and interpersonal relationships, Dr. Ajirotutu explained the importance of effective communication and interpersonal relationship in a hospital setting. He noted that “effective communication is essential in a hospital setting as it affects key areas such as patient safety, patient satisfaction, and healthcare team collaboration”.

He rounded off the lecture by mentioning some ways poor interpersonal relationships can impact professionals within a hospital setting and suggested important keys to a healthy and productive workplace.

The event also featured brief addresses by Dr. O. O. Coker, the Director of UNILAG Medical Services; and Prof. Folasade Akinsola, former Dean of Faculty of Clinical Sciences, UNILAG who served as representative of the UNILAG Medical Centre Board Chairperson, Prof. A. O. Oduwole.

The 12th Annual Health Week kicked off on Monday, December 2, 2024 with a sensitization walk around campus in commemoration of World AIDS Day. Events lined up for the week culminated in free medical screening for members of the University community on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall.
