The Best PhD Thesis Awardee at the 2024/2025 University of Lagos (UNILAG) Convocation Ceremonies, Dr. Adetoun Akitoye, recently presented her groundbreaking research at the University of Pretoria’s Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship. The UNILAG alumna is currently a visiting research fellow at the Centre and an ARUA Mastercard Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Food Systems.

Her presentation, titled “Active Intelligent Food Packages Based on Valorized Agricultural Wastes – Cassava Peels and Water Hyacinth”, addressed the pressing challenge of food waste and food insecurity. Dr. Akitoye’s work focused on converting agricultural by-products and environmental waste into biodegradable, intelligent food packaging films. These films, enhanced with green synthesised nanomaterials and freshness indicators, were designed to extend shelf life, reduce spoilage, and improve food safety.

Delivered as the opening lecture in the Centre’s 2026 postdoctoral seminar series, her presentation was widely praised for making complex science accessible to a diverse audience. It sparked discussions on commercial applications, patents, and opportunities for cross disciplinary collaboration, underscoring the potential of scientific innovation to drive sustainability and economic growth.
Earlier in the year, Dr. Akitoye also won the Prize for Best Presentation at the ARUA Mastercard Foundation Early Career Researchers Regional Training Workshop in Ghana. This recognition highlighted her clarity of vision, commitment to excellence, and the importance of mentorship in academic success.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, congratulates Dr. Akitoye as she continues raising the UNILAG banner high.
