UNILAG Moves to Enhance Campus Safety with Security Training Programme

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has concluded the second phase of its comprehensive capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and professionalism of the University’s security personnel.

With the theme: Enhancing Security Excellence: Protecting Life, Property and Community, the two-day programme was held at the newly refurbished Training Room of the Staff Training and Development Unit (ST&DU) from Wednesday, April 8 to Thursday, April 9, 2026.

In her Opening Remarks, the Director of ST&DU, Aderonke Asiwaju, said the initiative is designed to deepen security awareness and reinforce adherence to global best practices among campus security operatives. She noted that the programme reflects the University’s renewed commitment to safeguarding lives and property within its community.

Describing the training as both timely and necessary, Asiwaju stated that it had been long overdue, particularly in light of evolving trends in criminal activities within academic environments. She added that the Unit had consistently advocated for such training, and Management’s approval underscores the institution’s proactive approach to campus security.

She further emphasized that security remains a collective responsibility, reiterating the University’s resolve to maintain a safe and conducive environment for academic excellence. According to her, the initiative also aligns with the priorities of the Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, who is committed to ensuring that the institution is known not only for academic distinction but also for the protection of lives and property.

Resourceful Sessions
The training featured a lineup of experienced resource persons addressing key aspects of modern security operations.

Delivering a lecture on “Security Awareness and Orientation: Overview of University Security Policies, Procedures and Protocols,” the Coordinator of UNILAG’s Security Unit, David Omotosho, highlighted the importance of awareness in sustaining a secure campus environment.

He explained that the University’s open environment and porous boundaries present unique security challenges, necessitating the adoption of sophisticated, technology-driven strategies. According to him, measures such as surveillance systems, beat monitoring, and strict access control mechanisms have been deployed to strengthen campus security.

Mr. Omotosho also revealed plans to enhance real-time monitoring and emergency response through the integration of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and a dedicated control room. He noted that continuous training and awareness would significantly reduce crime and improve operational efficiency.

In another session, Professor of Public Law, Abiodun Odusote, examined the legal framework guiding security operations. He stressed that professionalism must be grounded in sound legal knowledge, warning that ignorance of the law could expose the University to liabilities.

Prof. Odusote clarified the distinction between the roles of campus security personnel and law enforcement agencies, noting that security operatives are private citizens with limited powers. He emphasized the need to respect human rights, adhere to due process, and apply discretion and proportionality in the discharge of duties.

Also speaking, the Divisional Police Officer of Sabo Police Station, Chief Superintendent of Police Comfort Alabi, delivered a session on crime, investigation, and criminal procedures. She educated participants on proper evidence handling, noting that poor crime scene management could compromise investigations and weaken prosecution.

Similarly, Ajanaku Ibrahim Kayode of the Police Service Commission provided insights into best practices in patrol operations, emphasizing intelligence gathering, strategic planning, and the need for adequate equipment.

Throughout all the sessions, participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained during the training to enhance campus safety and security.
