It is time to roll out the drums once again, as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has retained its position as Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.
According to the ranking released on September 30, 2026, UNILAG shares the top position in Nigeria with the University of Ibadan and Covenant University. Globally, the three institutions are placed in the 801–1000 band among two thousand, two hundred and ninety seven (2,297) ranked universities worldwide.
THE World University Rankings 2027 ranking assessed the universities across one hundred and eighteen (118) countries and territories using seventeen (17) indicators grouped into the following five key performance areas:
- Teaching
- Research Environment
- Research Quality
- Industry Engagement
- International Outlook
The ranking showed that University of Lagos recorded the highest research quality score among Nigerian universities, with sixty seven point eight (67.8) points. This achievement reflects UNILAG’s continued commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and global impact.
