The newly appointed Chairman of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Sports Council, Professor Alabi Soneye, led members of the Council, the Steering Committee, and other key stakeholders on an inspection tour of the University’s Sports Centre on Friday, June 13, 2025.
The tour provided an avenue for the assessment of the current state of major facilities within the centre, as well as identify areas in need of repairs and upgrades .
According to Professor Soneye, the tour was necessary to gain firsthand insight into the usability of the facilities and to lay the groundwork for a cohesive plan towards revitalizing the centre.
His words, “We need to understand the state of what we have so we can determine what is needed to improve it. The goal is to strengthen our sports infrastructure in a way that supports both human and institutional development.”
He emphasized the University’s commitment to deploying sports as a critical tool for nurturing excellence, and urged the coaches to bring their best efforts to the task.
The inspection team was guided around the complex by Mr. Patrick Asuquo, Manager of Builders Consultants Ltd., who offered technical insight into the infrastructure and its maintenance needs. The Ag. Director of the Sports Centre, Mr. Felix Akeju, Secretary of the Sports Council Management Board, Mrs O.A. Oladiti, and Secretary of the Sports Centre Steering Committee, Mr. Monday Aikpokhio, were also on hand to give ready support.
With this inspection marking the first of many strategic steps, the University of Lagos Sports Council under Professor Soneye’s leadership appears poised to transform the Sports Centre into a hub of excellence, one that fosters talent, supports physical well-being, and reflects the University’s broader commitment to holistic education.
