Three (3) University of Lagos students have emerged top winners of the 2025 Bode Osunkoya Research Competition. The competition was part of the line-up of activities for the 2025 PSRG-Richardson Oil & Gas HSSE Forum, recently held in Lagos.
The three outstanding students are:
First Place – Oluwaseun Amaize (Department of Chemical Engineering)
Second Place – Justice Esiri (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Third Place – Ojo Babajide (Department of Pharmacy)

The competition, which spotlighted innovative research in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE), provided a national platform for students to propose forward-thinking solutions to Nigeria’s energy challenges.
With the theme: Nigeria: The Gulf of Guinea’s Energy Hub – Mapping the Pathway, the competition challenged participants to propose bold, research-driven strategies for shaping Nigeria’s energy future. The winning papers stood out for their visionary approaches and emphasis on sustainable development within the energy sector.
The first-place winner, Oluwaseun Amaize presented an innovative paper on how Machine Learning and open-source energy data can support smarter policy decisions. He introduced a predictive framework titled PATHS (Protect, Advance, Trade, Harness, Sustain), designed to model Nigeria’s energy growth scenarios and enable a safer, more sustainable energy landscape.
Justice Esiri, who came second, explored the transformative potential of Floating LNGs (FLNGs), digital ports, smart pipelines, and modular refineries in positioning Nigeria as the Gulf of Guinea’s leading energy and logistics hub. His work highlighted how HSSE can serve as the unifying framework for industrial innovation and safety.
Ojo Babajide, the third-place winner, focused on unlocking Nigeria’s oil and gas potential through strategic interventions in security, infrastructure, regulatory credibility, market design, and environmental sustainability. His paper proposed pragmatic solutions, including advanced pipeline surveillance and reforms to foster investment and operational efficiency.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of the University’s management, staff, and students, congratulates the trio for their laudable feat and wishes them success ahead.
