Proactive Security Awareness and Personal Safety Measures on Campus

Important Notice - Maroon

This is to inform our dear students, valuable members of staff, business owners and all university stakeholders that the University Management remains unyielding in its commitment to providing a safe, secure, and conducive environment for learning, teaching, research, community service and administration. While we boast of a highly secure environment, we cannot completely divorce ourselves from the prevailing security dynamics across the country. However, ensuring absolute security is a collective responsibility. In light of current realities in Nigeria, it is imperative that we all heighten our security awareness and remain vigilant at all times.

We urge everyone – particularly our students – to adopt a proactive approach to personal safety. Please adhere strictly to the following security guidelines:

1. Avoid Solo Movement at Night

  • Night crawling: Students should not engage in night crawling.
  • Use of Buddy System: If it is absolutely necessary to walk at night, always move in groups of at least two or three.
  • Stick to Lit Pathways: Avoid taking shortcuts through isolated, bushy, or poorly lit areas. Stick to the main, well-illuminated campus walkways at night.
  • Night Reading/Activities: If you must use the libraries or lecture halls for night study, ensure you wrap up early enough or move back to your hostels in the company of others.

2. Be Wary of Your Environment

  • Situational Awareness: Pay attention to your surroundings. Avoid the use of heavy headphones or being overly distracted by your mobile phones while walking, especially at night.
  • Identify the Unusual: Be observant of strange faces, loiterers, or unusual gatherings around the hostels, lecture theatres, and relaxation spots.
  • Digital Discretion: Be cautious about broadcasting your real-time location or expensive possessions on social media platforms while on or around campus.
  • Hostel & Office Security: Ensure that hostel doors, office cabinets, and laboratory entry points are securely locked when unattended, even for brief periods.

3. Report Suspicious Activities Immediately

  • If you see something, say something. Do not assume “all is well” if your intuition tells you otherwise.
  • Kindly memorise and utilise the University emergency security hotlines provided below.
  • Situational Awareness: Avoid walking with both earphones plugged in, especially at night or early in the morning. Being audibly isolated prevents you from noticing immediate changes in your environment.

4. Business Owners and Vendors

  • Regulated Operating Hours: All businesses must strictly adhere to official campus closing times. No unauthorised overnight stay is permitted within business premises.
  • Vigilance Against Strange Packages: Be observant of abandoned luggage, bags, or unusual parcels around your shops. Report any unclaimed items to the security post immediately – do not attempt to open them yourself.

5. Vehicle and Traffic Security

  • Security Disc: All students, members of staff, business owners and regular visitors who drive must ensure the safety of their vehicles and security discs at all time.
  • No Free Rides: Students are strongly advised against accepting free rides from strangers or unregistered vehicles inside or outside the campus gates. You are encouraged to use approved campus transport services.

6. A Golden Rule:

Vigilance should not breed suspicion, but carelessness breeds vulnerability. If you see something out of place, or if you notice individuals displaying unusual behaviour, kindly report it quietly and immediately to the security team.
