UNILAG AFRETEC Network Hosts STEM Masterclass on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The AFRETEC Network at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Monday, May 11, 2026, commenced a four-day masterclass workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Deep Learning for selected undergraduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Held at the UNILAG NITHub, the workshop brings together undergraduate participants from universities across the South-West geopolitical zone. The initiative is designed to equip students with both foundational and practical knowledge in AI, machine learning, and TensorFlow applications, while fostering innovation, digital skills development, and future-ready competencies.

Speaking at the opening session, the Convener, Dr. Babatunde Sawyerr, introduced participants to the fundamentals and real-world applications of AI, machine learning, and deep learning. Day One also featured sessions on data presentation and representation, laying the groundwork for the development of intelligent systems, data-driven solutions, and responsible technology applications.

Over the next four days, participants will engage in intensive hands-on training covering core concepts, emerging tools, and practical applications in machine learning and deep learning. The workshop emphasizes problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking, and the development of innovative solutions to contemporary societal and industrial challenges.

The programme aligns with the University’s commitment to advancing digital transformation, promoting quality STEM education, and supporting the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The workshop, which will run until Thursday, May 14, 2026, also reflects UNILAG’s broader vision of building a knowledge-driven society by empowering young people with relevant digital and technological skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving global technology ecosystem.

The maiden edition of the workshop, held in June 2025, recorded significant success and paved the way for subsequent strategic collaborations involving the University, including its partnership with OpenAI in October 2025.
