The 2026 Sandwich Week of the Faculty of Education, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has commenced with a sensitization walk and opening ceremony.
The colourful walk, from the Sandwich Office in the Faculty of Education through the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) and Faculty of Science to the Sports Centre, formed a key component of activities lined up for the week while the opening ceremony marked the formal commencement of the programme. The ceremony featured a hepatitis awareness campaign, cheerleading, dance performances, and other activities.
Speaking at the event held at the Sports Centre, health educator Mrs. Ramota Dende sensitised participants on the health risks associated with hepatitis, with particular emphasis on Hepatitis B, a highly infectious form of the disease. She explained that hepatitis is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver and can lead to serious health complications if left undetected or untreated.
Mrs. Dende identified Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E as the major types of the disease, noting that they differ in modes of transmission. According to her, hepatitis can be transmitted through contaminated food and water, infected blood, and unsafe health practices, depending on the type of virus. She added that prolonged infection can result in liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
Mrs. Dende urged participants to prioritise prevention by learning about the disease and its risk factors, getting tested to know their health status, and taking appropriate preventive measures. She particularly advised individuals who test negative for Hepatitis B to get vaccinated, stressing the importance of vaccination in preventing infection.
She emphasized that “prevention is better than cure” and encouraged participants to take proactive steps to protect themselves against hepatitis.
The opening activities concluded with a football competition among students, alongside recreational games including Ayo Olopon, Ludo, and Whot, providing opportunities for recreation and social interaction.
The 2026 Sandwich Week will conclude on Friday, August 28, 2026 with two events:
- Matriculation Ceremony for fresh students of the Sandwich programme at 9:00 a.m. at the Glass House, Faculty of Education, UNILAG
- Faux Traditional Wedding at 2:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Education, UNILAG
