The University of Lagos is set to commission its Geosciences Centre of Excellence on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Science Complex (formerly the Faculty of Science).
More than just a new building, the Centre represents a significant step forward in the University’s commitment to strengthening teaching, research, and real-world impact in the geosciences.
The project is the result of a strong collaboration, funded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). Together, these partners have contributed to a legacy that will support not only today’s students and researchers, but generations to come.
Thoughtfully designed as a modern, three suspended-floor facility, the Centre brings together a range of spaces tailored for both learning and discovery. From laboratories and workshops to lecture theatres, a museum, simulation laboratory, and library, every part of the building has been created to encourage curiosity, collaboration, and hands-on experience. Offices, sit-out areas, and other support facilities complete a space that is as functional as it is forward-looking.
At its heart, the Geosciences Centre of Excellence reflects a simple but powerful idea: learning should not stop at theory. By strengthening the connection between the classroom and industry, the Centre creates opportunities for students and researchers to engage with real challenges and develop practical solutions that matter.
As the University prepares to unveil this new facility, it marks yet another moment in UNILAG’s continuing journey to grow, evolve, and contribute meaningfully to national and global development through knowledge and innovation.
