Breaking the Wall of Industrial Accidents: UNILAG Project Wins 3rd Place at Falling Walls Lab

On June 5, 2026, innovation took center stage at the Falling Walls Lab Ibadan, where a groundbreaking project from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) earned 3rd place in the prestigious global pitch competition.

The project, titled “Breaking the Wall of Industrial Accidents,” showcased a Smart Safety Helmet engineered to protect workers in high‑risk environments. This wearable device integrates multiple life‑saving features:

  • Fall Detection — instantly alerts when a traumatic fall occurs.
  • Pulse Monitoring — tracks anomalies in heart rate to prevent unnoticed medical emergencies.
  • Gas Leakage Sensors — detects hazardous gases in industrial sites.
  • GPS Tracking — ensures workers’ locations are always monitored for safety.

Behind this innovation is a collaborative team of UNILAG students led by Olaoluwa Ogboro alias Kingsam, a 500‑level student of Petroleum and Gas Engineering. At the competition, Olaoluwa Ogboro who presented the device stood out among twenty (20) exceptional finalists including PhD holders, MBA professionals, seasoned entrepreneurs, and undergraduates from across Nigeria. Remarkably, Olaoluwa was the only undergraduate in the Top 3, underscoring the ingenuity of UNILAG students.

Other members of the collaborative team are:

  • Kehinde Adegboye (Mechanical Engineering, 400L)
  • Chi‑ife Ileka (Computer Engineering, 400L)
  • Kenneth Silva‑Eboagwu (Physics, 400L)
  • Gerald Udomeh (Petroleum & Gas Engineering, 400L)
  • Samuel Uko (Petroleum & Gas Engineering, 400L)
  • Boluwatife Odujirin (Petroleum & Gas Engineering, 400L)
  • Precious Adegoke (Petroleum & Gas Engineering, 500L)
  • Raphael Ajah (Petroleum & Gas Engineering, 500L)

Why It Matters:

Industrial accidents remain a pressing challenge in the energy sector. This Smart Safety Helmet represents a practical, interdisciplinary solution — merging engineering, computer science, and healthcare technology to save lives.

The competition, by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), the German Academic Exchange Service, invited participants to answer the central question: “Which are the next walls to fall?” For the UNILAG team, the answer was clear: the wall of unsafe workplaces.

The Vice‑Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, on behalf of the Senate, staff, and students, congratulates Olaoluwa Ogboro and the team for their contribution to cutting‑edge, interdisciplinary innovation and commitment to building safer futures.
